Join the NASS Board as Trustee and Treasurer

This is an important time for special schools, their learners and families. As the sector responds to significant change, NASS needs strong governance and clear financial leadership.

NASS is the membership organisation for special schools in England and Wales, providing support, advice, information, events, training and a strong national voice for the sector.

We are seeking one Trustee to join our Board and serve as Treasurer for an initial three-year term. The role is expected to be available from November 2026.

Why join us?

As a Trustee, you will share responsibility for NASS’s strategic direction, effective governance and accountability. As Treasurer, you will provide financial leadership and help the Board make well-informed, sustainable decisions.

This is an opportunity to use your expertise to support a national membership body and make a meaningful difference to special schools and the children and young people they serve.

About the role

The Treasurer maintains an overview of NASS’s financial affairs, supports its financial viability and ensures that appropriate financial records, controls and procedures are in place. Financial responsibility remains shared by the whole Board.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing budgets, accounts and financial statements in partnership with the CEO, and presenting them clearly to the Board, members and Annual General Meeting.
  • Helping trustees understand their financial duties and providing constructive scrutiny and challenge.
  • Advising on the financial implications of strategy, ensuring resources meet present and future needs.
  • Overseeing reserves, investments, statutory reporting and any required independent examination or audit.
  • Supporting fundraising strategy and liaising with the CEO and staff on financial matters.
  • Approving payments in line with NASS’s Finance Protocol.

Who we are looking for

  • Financial qualifications and/or substantial relevant experience.
  • An understanding of charity governance and the legal duties and responsibilities of trustees.
  • The ability to analyse proposals, interpret financial information and make balanced recommendations.
  • Tact, diplomacy, sound judgement, impartiality and respect for confidentiality.
  • Clear communication skills and a willingness to provide occasional advice to staff.
  • Experience of charity finance, income generation and pension schemes would be advantageous.

Time commitment

The Treasurer should expect to commit approximately two days per month. This includes six Council meetings each year, held through a mix of virtual and face-to-face sessions, an annual strategy day, committee work, occasional external events and ad hoc advice to staff.
