Teaching Assistant
Chailey Heritage Foundation

Due to an increase in pupil numbers we are currently recruiting for Teaching Assistants to join our Ofsted outstanding school. The Teaching Assistant role is vital in ensuring that all of our young people, no matter what their disability, can go to school to learn, make friends and have fun. It is hard work, and requires commitment, but it’s a hugely fulfilling job and can bring real joy.

The role of a Teaching Assistant (TA)

At Chailey Heritage the teaching assistant job is very different to that in a mainstream school. You will support the teacher in creating opportunities for the children to learn in their own individual ways. You will need to be creative, flexible, patient, and perceptive, as you will need to write down observations for the teacher. However, as well as supporting the teaching, you will be trained by nurses, therapists and senior staff to carry out many other medical procedures.

To support you with this, you will receive a first-class induction and ongoing training from qualified professionals, and you will not be expected to carry any procedures out alone until you have been signed-off as competent. You will be assigned a ‘buddy’ to mentor you and make sure that you are confident in your new role, and you will have a teacher and senior TA who will set targets for you and support you. There is a team of nurses available to support and advise staff and manage emergencies and if necessary call the on-site Doctor.

You will, in time, become a very proficient practitioner with many valuable skills. Often our TAs go on to train as nurses, therapists or teachers having spent several years with us.
