Identifying and Investigating Allegations of Professional Abuse 11th June

Overview

What is the difference between an allegation and a complaint? What if the person isn’t our employee? Which is the most up to date legislation and DfE guidance for managing allegations of professional abuse and what about keeping records afterwards?

This one day course is suitable for members of the school leadership team, heads of department and / or HR officers who may in the future refer, be asked to investigate, or oversee an investigation of, an allegation against a member of staff or volunteer.

Aim

To equip delegates with the skills and understanding to recognise allegations of professional abuse and undertake robust disciplinary investigations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • be able to describe a range of behaviours that could be considered ‘allegations of professional abuse’
  • have a sound understanding of the role and responsibilities of an investigating officer
  • be familiar with the relevant legislation and procedures / guidance, including time-scales and record-keeping
  • be able to plan then undertake an efficient investigation and draw conclusions confidently
  • appreciate when suspension may be appropriate, and possible alternatives to suspension
  • understand which circumstances invoke the legal duty to refer to regulatory bodies

About the Presenter

Carolyn Eyre, Safeguarding Consultant

Carolyn is an independent safeguarding consultant, working with schools, multi-academy trusts, FE colleges, local authorities and LSCBs across England. She worked in the Local Education Authority safeguarding arena for many years, first in Education Welfare services before becoming Child Protection co-ordinator and then Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing for the authority – combining also the roles of Senior Allegations Manager and Safer Recruitment lead officer – for a large local authority.

Carolyn has a particular interest in the protection of children with disabilities; her knowledge and understanding of the complexities of safeguarding vulnerable groups has won her many friends in the special school & college sector and she is well known to NASS members.

As a member of the Safer Recruitment Consortium (NSPCC, Lucy Faithfull Foundation, CAPE and NASS) Carolyn is responsible for updating and reviewing the national Safer Recruitment training. She is the only independent consultant invited to be a part of the Safer Recruitment consortium and developed, with the support of NASS members, the updated Guidance for Safe Working Practice for education professionals which was published in October 2015.

Carolyn has MA Professional Training & Development complimented by:-

  • Certificate in social work with children
  • BEd (Hons) Professional Education
  • NSPCC post-graduate Certificate of Competence
  • NEBOSH certificate in Occupational Health & Safety

She is currently the Chair of Trustees of a small early years provider, having previously served for 18 years as a school governor, and is also a trustee for the National Association for Special Educational Needs (nasen)
