Information on course content
Non-maintained and independent special schools should already be aware of the on-line Safer Recruitment training package commissioned by the DCSF, developed by NCSL and now available via the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) in response to recommendation 16 of the Bichard Inquiry report (published June 2004), which relates to training for Head teachers and school governors to ensure that interviews to appoint staff reflect the importance of safeguarding children. The guidance applies to independent, non-maintained and maintained schools.
The DCSF stated that every Head teacher and chair of governors must complete the training; furthermore, the School (Staffing) Regulations 2009 state that from 1st January 2010, every interview panel must include at least one person that has successfully completed this training. You may also be aware that OfSTED now look for evidence of safe recruitment practice during school inspections.
There will be an assessment of learning at the end of the event, and certificates will be issued to those who achieve the required pass-mark. Whilst this is a full day time commitment, it will allow you to discuss issues arising from the training with peers and an experienced trainer.
