NASS is hosting a training day at Action for Children Penhurst School on Thursday 15th July 2010 on the subject of Implementation of Intensive Interaction, which will be presented by Dr Mark Barber. This day may be of particular interest to Headteachers, Heads of Care and Speech & Language Therapists. We hope schools will send delegates who are keen to develop this approach and cascade information within their schools.
Intensive interaction is an approach to teaching the pre-speech fundamentals of communication to children and adults who have severe learning difficulties and/or autism and who are still at an early stage of communication development. The approach was developed during the nineteen-eighties by a team of staff, including Dave Hewett and Melanie Nind, working at Harperbury Hospital School in Hertfordshire.
Dr. Mark Barber started his academic career working in the classroom as a teacher at Melland School in Manchester. During this time he developed practical and research skills in collaboration with Dr. Juliet Goldbart leading to a number of publications. He is known for his innovative work on developing the Affective Communication Assessment [ACA], his work with the use of micro switches and latterly for his Theory to Practice Seminars and Intensive Interaction Training Days that highlight the use of interactive approaches to assist people with both Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities [PIMD] and Profound Intellectual Disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Disorders [PIMD/ASD] to learn.
He is currently living in Melbourne where he acts in an advisory and consultancy role with a number of Melbourne Special Development Schools and other agencies.
Penhurst School staff have successfully been using the approach of Intensive Interaction for several years now, and have developed a training programme for 8 staff per year to attain Advanced Practitioner status. They have a close association with Dr. Mark Barber and are delighted to recommend him to you.
